A spectacular highlight of Hanover are the Herrenhausen Gardens, a prime example of the best horticultural art. The gardens are among the most important and best-preserved baroque gardens in Europe. The Great Garden extends over more than 50 hectares and its basic structure has been preserved almost in its original form. A romantic stroll is like immersing yourself in another time. The many sculptures in the garden and the large fountain with its 70-meter-high water column are also great. In the summer months, the park is illuminated at night - a wonderful sight. The Herrenhausen Palace, to which the gardens belong, was the summer residence of the Guelphs and was rebuilt on the same site after it was destroyed in the Second World War. The palace now houses a modern and impressive conference center and a museum worth seeing.

Located in the middle of Hanover, the Maschsee is a real highlight. Especially in summer (this year in August), when Hanover around the Maschsee turns into a huge party and fun area. The old town district of Hanover has a charm all its own. Although the city is characterized by modern functional buildings in many places, Hanover has retained a romantic island at its core. Hanover once had a large old town center, which was destroyed in the Second World War except for 40 houses. Many of these were in the Knochenhauerstrasse, Kramerstrasse and Burgstrasse area. So it was decided to demolish all the remaining historic half-timbered buildings and move them here - a move that is unique in Germany. With the astonishing result of a really beautiful old town center with magical cafes, restaurants and small shops. The Ballhofplatz is particularly charming.

Hanover has a world-class museum. The Sprengel Museum houses an exquisite collection of modern art from the 20th and 21st centuries. The collection is based on the legacy of the chocolate manufacturer Sprengel, who gave his art collection to the city of Hanover. The museum has many extremely remarkable works by Paul Klee, Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Max Beckmann, Emil Nolde, Franz Marc, August Macke, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Kurt Schwitters. There are also works by Warhol, Calder, Richter and Polke. More than 400 works by the exceptional artist Niki de Saint Phalle are also particularly worth seeing.

The New Town Hall is unusual. Unusually beautiful, because the building from 1913 is reminiscent of a baroque castle. The town's landmark is a very popular photo subject, thanks to its romantic turrets and decorations. The magnificent building was built on 6,000 beech piles. The town hall is still the seat of the town administration today, but can be visited during the day. It's worth it just for the spectacular dome with its viewing platform. If the visibility is good, the view from here stretches as far as the Harz Mountains. It's particularly great in the early evening (open until 6 p.m.) - beautiful and highly romantic, because there are hardly any visitors.
